Purpose of the project

The problem
The issue of personal safety is a grave one, especially for women in the National capital region, often referred to as the national rape capital, in as much helplessness as in anger.
The issues are many, some of which as discussed in this article. This wiki is not about venting anger or discussing non-actionable causes.
The purpose of this project is to suggest ways, organise acts & build a network of people who take ownership of making Delhi a safer place.

The trigger
Recently, a young girl was brutally assaulted and raped in a moving bus in NCR. The heinous act has, rightly, roused the nation and wants to rein in such criminal acts.

However, what is absent and is sorely needed is a way to channel the anger and frustration into something that can actually cause a change for the better.

What should be done?
Read this very insightful article by Kartikeya Tripathi, about what exactly is effective in reducing such crimes.
Essentially the strategy to reduce such crimes is not to create deterrence through punishments alone, but to reduce the opportunity in all our public spaces for rapists and criminals to indulge in even the thought of the crime.
The author of the article points out the importance of such simple things as improving the lighting & messages about the plain clothed policemen in the area. The strategy is to create an open atmosphere where one can be secure knowing that an attempt at crime can quickly attract a deterrent reaction.

How do we achieve this? What will we need?
1. We need to step up and volunteer - not (just) to patrol streets, but to research, generate ideas, create solutions & communicate simple strategies.
2. Identify clear achievable goals and set an action plan
3. Assign teams based on location, objectives, expertise (we will need analysts, activists, communicators, public servants & project managers)
4. Act on the plans

How will we go about it?
1. Identify unsafe locations (Metro stands, bus stands, dark alleyways near public transport, pathways from major workplaces (offices/ markets) to bus/metro stations, any other?)
2. We will need to scope out and locate all such locations. Prepare a list.
3. Once the list is prepared, identify local issues that make the place unsafe
4. Generate ideas to make it safe
5. Act on the ideas

So how we start?
We will have to collaborate and be equal partners in all undertakings.
I do not specialise in criminal psychology, or law strategy or any such thing. I am sure we have plenty many smart people among us. So what I am proposing can be improved upon. So please suggest how this action plan can be improved. NOW.

1. First, lets get together. Become a member on the FB page -> https://www.facebook.com/safeindelhi or mail me your interest at ajinkyapawar@gmail.com
2. Be conscious of the everyday route you travel on. Openpaths might help.
3. Start observing places around you, take photos of the ones that you think need intervention. Post about it here or on FB page. Maybe we can use google maps to map the criminal space. (Can anyone access police databases and provide locational data? I can then create visual interface to map out the criminal density)
4. we can then collectively identify and ideate for making those spaces safer.

First agenda.
Map out the trouble areas thoroughly. All ideas are welcome.

cheers,
